“ There are many portrait photographers I admire and have been influenced by, such as Jane Bown and Michael Birt, but especially Arnold Newman."

"Arnold Newman pioneered the style of ‘Environmental Portraiture’- placing the subjects in carefully composed settings to capture the essence of their work and personality. According to Newman ‘ the portrait is a form of biography, it’s purpose is to inform now and record for history’.

I prefer the environmental portrait, because I find that the sitter is more likely to feel relaxed in his or her own surrounding and I also am able to interpret their personality better. I enjoy the thrill of going to the clients home or office and not knowing what to expect, seeing the environment with fresh eyes often picking out details the client has taken for granted because they see it everyday.

Every portrait one observes is the result of an interaction between the photographer and the sitter and what they chose to give and how the photographer interpreted through the choice of camera, lighting, film, lens and positioning in that very moment.“
